My Top 3 Favorite Face Masks - A Review.

IT'S FRI-YAY! Happy weekend everyone. I mentioned last week that I would post a review about my favorite face masks, and I'm so excited to talk about these because I've been using them for a while now & have been doing wonders for my skin (In addition to some other skin products, and the way I eat too of course). Here we go!

1. One Love - Brand New Day Scrub & Mask: This scrub is a go-to for when I'm in more of a time crunch but still want to get the benefits of doing a mask and some exfoliation. The packaging gives you directions on how to use it as a mask vs. as a scrub. If using it as a mask, it says to leave it on for 10-15 minutes but I can usually get away with leaving it on for more like 5-10 minutes. In addition, what I like to do is to use it as an exfoliator once I'm washing it off. The "grains" or powder is fine and not abrasive (as with any masks/scrubs - go easy when working it in your skin!) It says it's good for clearing skin up, but for my skin, I know that this by itself will not keep my skin clear. But I would say it is something that can help. I love the packaging too because it gives you a guide on WHAT it's for, WHAT it does WHEN/HOW OFTEN you use it - all of the One Love products have them & it makes things simple and easy! It has a pineapple scent BECAUSE one of it's main ingredients is Pineapple fruit extract. Lastly, this is a kaolin clay-based mask and scrub which helps with pulling out impurities from your skin.
Tip: Mix with Greek Yogurt for a more clarifying mask OR with Raw Honey for a more hydrating mask.
Price: $39
Rate: 7/10 - Good for if you have a more sensitive skin AND occasional breakouts, OR to just maintain your skin.

2. Gressa - Dirty Pretty Things: One of my favorite things about this product is that it combines a power-house of all natural ingredients for a deep clean that my skin really needs. This is also a clay-based mask, but it uses Red Moroccan Rhassoul Clay instead. (TBH: I'm not a clay expert - I just know from reading online articles that Kaolin is better for sensitive skin, whereas Red Clay is stronger in a sense that it's more mineral rich and is able to pull more impurities out of your skin). I will tell you that this mask tingles a little bit (at least for me), but I'm not sure exactly from what Ingredient - I'm guessing the Neem and/or the Cloves. When I use this I tend to keep it on for 25-30 mins, and I do the same as I did when using the mask above - I gently work the product into my skin to get additional exfoliating effects. Price point wise, I think this is a great product that gives you the luxury of all natural ingredients + the benefits that come with it. I also think it will last you a long time since you really should only be using a mask once or twice a week!
Price: $48
Rate: 9/10 - Good for those who have more pesky/troublesome skin, but make sure to follow up with a good serum and/or moisturizer! Get all the benefits of those minerals ;) Price-point wise, I think this is far superior than anything I would pick out from Sephora.

3. May Lindstrom - The Problem Solver: Alright you guys - now before your jaw drops at the price of this product please hear me out first. This mask if by far the LARGEST size out of the 3 I am writing about. Which means that I've had the same container for about a year and a half or so (that may be past it's "good until" date, but I made sure to store it well & I think it still works!). Anyway, this is my absolute favorite & is something that I will most likely have to wait to purchase again because it is a more expensive product. BUT! It is one of the BEST face masks that I have tried. Seriously - the name says it all. May Lindstrom's products (and I've tried most of her line), are heavenly to say the least, and this is not an exception. The Problem Solver really does solve my skin problems at least. I would say this mask if better for those who, again, have a more problematic skin (as I have - I really have to maintain my skin well to prevent those pesky breakouts). This mask tingles as well, just like the Gressa one, but that to me is just the product working. I would say the ingredients of this and the Gressa mask is somewhat similar (with the Red Rhassoul Clay as the base), but I would say this one has more "premium" ingredients if you will. It also contains cayenne pepper (say what?!) - which is to help get the circulation flowing for your skin. This mask is by far the longest one I keep on my face because its recommended time is 45 mins on. It's truly a ritual when it comes to using his mask - so I highly suggest this when you're having a little R&R and detoxing. If this is out of your price range (as it currently is out of mine :( - I'm going to have to save up for it!) I recommend the Dirty Pretty Things by Gressa which is half the price BUT is still similar. You can check the ingredients on each individual product by clicking on the links so you can compare!
Tips: Use this for when you really want to treat yo'self ;) Also for when you have a big event coming up soon, use this once or twice a week to keep your skin in check.
Price: at a whopping $90 dollars, this is definitely a luxury pick - BUT I do have to say, it is one of THE BEST if not all time best, face mask that I have used.
Rate: 9/10 - I would give it a 10/10 except it's not as budget-friendly for me.

Note: So as you noticed, one of the masks I talked about has a DUAL purpose of being a MASK + a SCRUB. So get a 2-in-1 product. Also, I try to use mostly #greenbeauty products (not all - I'm still having a hard time to completely transition to using ALL green products due to $$  and being in medical school). I guess you can say I try to be #greenbeautyish. Lastly, I'm always trying to find the best products for the best price, and I seriously consider skincare products as an investment. I've had acne for a long time and ever since switching over to green beauty products I have noticed a tremendous difference (compared to when I've been advised to take Accutane - I personally did not want to take it, but if that's your jam or if it helped you, more power to you!).

I hope that this post was helpful! Do you guys want to see more about #greenbeautyish products and reviews? I honestly truly love them!

JaxFaves Series: Part 1 - Coffee Shops

HNY Everyone! With the new year comes new things for the blog. I'm super excited to announce this series which will highlight some places in Jacksonville, FL - or as I refer to it "Jax" - that I love going to. This post will highlight COFFEE SHOPS that I personally love to go to, as well as those that I have yet to go to and would love to visit.

Whenever I'm home for the holidays or any other type of break, I cherish going to these places because this city is near and dear to my heart as it is home. I hope you enjoy & one day if you're ever visiting the area, check these coffee shops out!

1. Bold Bean: With three locations and counting, this is one of my favorite places to get a latte at. One is located in Jax Beach. One in Riverside. And the newest one is located in San Marco. These three locations totally fit within the neighborhoods/area that they are in and I adore each one of them. It's a great place to sit and have coffee with your friends, or try to get some work done. If you go, try: a latte with Spicy Chocolate syrup, or Vanilla.

2. Brew - Five Points: Located in Historic Five Points (and next to other places I love going to), Brew has once of the best Matcha Lattes in town. TBH, I haven't seen other coffee shops with matcha lattes, and if you know me, you know my love for matcha. Their matcha latte is definitely a more traditional in a sense that it's not sweetened already like it is at Starbucks. That way, you really get that flavor of matcha goodness. YUM! If you go, try: Obvs the Matcha Latte. Hint: Get it with soy milk if you like a little more sweetness.

3. Southern Grounds & Co.: If you want to breathe in fresh sea breeze, go to Southern Grounds & Co which is super close to the beach. Also go here if you want to have a big slice of cake along with you coffee. If you go, try: Chai Latte, with a slice of the Salted Caramel Cake. Hint: I believe they rotate out what types of cake they have so really just get what you like ;)

4. Sippers Coffeehouse: If you have some serious studying to get done, or have a deadline due while you're in Jax, go here. The environment is a little bit more quiet which makes it great for a more intense coffee shop study sesh. It's also very cozy and home-y so it's not like you're in the library studying either. If you go, try: Chai Latte, with one of their muffins (some are available gluten free).

5. Three Layers: an oldie, but goodie - to many anyways because it's been a while since I've gone. But, Three Layers is such a great spot to just chill, sip on your coffee, along with their amazing pastries. They also have a garden in the back, which is super dreamy & it's called the Zen Garden.

Coffee Shop Wishlist (AKA where I still need to go):
-Vagabond Coffee
-Southern Roots Filling Station
-Breezy Coffee Shop and Cafe

What are you favorite coffee shops in your area?! (Recommend some down below, so one day if I ever visit, i'll know exactly where to go).

Simple & Casual OOTD - and Update for what's to come in 2017.

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season & are ready to ring in the New Year. Can you believe it's going to be 2017 in 2 days!? I've been home for Christmas break, spending time with family, friends, and the fiance. It's been a much needed break, lemme tell you.

As a Christmas gift, my amazing parents upgraded my phone to an iPhone 7+. So naturally my sister and I had to do a little photoshoot, and we got some pictures of a super simple OOTD that I wore on Christmas day. Nothing super fancy, or dressy. With traveling and trying to fit what you can in a luggage that will fit the overhead bins, you gotta pick and choose wisely. I tend to opt for more versatile pieces that can be casual yet still look polished.
(Outfit deets will be down below).

REVIEW: RXBAR

As promised here is my review on the RXBAR! I got a special promo on them through Facebook, where you can get 6 flavors for $3, to introduce you to the brand and flavor. I'm not sure how to find the code again, but I will have a link at the end of this post for $5 off your first purchase!

Without further ado, here it is:

  1. Sea salt caramel - TBH, this was not a good flavor for me. I don't think the caramel taste works with the dates. Personally, this was not the flavor for me. (sadly).

  2. Mint chocolate - This is one of my top 2 faves! It was very good! I loved the refreshing taste of the mint and the chocolate. The taste works well with the dates, where as the sea salt caramel just didn't do it for me.

  3. Chocolate sea salt - if you don't like mint, you would probably love this one instead. This one is the other flavor in my top 2 faves! (Actually I think this is my first favorite!!!) The chocolate sea salt works great with the dates. The salt flavor is not overwhelming whatsoever.

  4. Chocolate coconut: I surprisingly loved this one! I'm not usually a coconut person when it comes to deserts/bars/etc. but I love coconut water, coconut oil - so I'm weird in that way. BUT this was actually Good. The coconut flavor was not overwhelming, and it blended well with the chocolate flavor.

  5. Blueberry: this one was good too but I love the ones with chocolate (and chocolate chips) more - I'm a chocolate girl! I was eating this during one of the breaks of my exam. It kept me full throughout, even if I just ate half. This is a good flavor for you if you're not really into the chocolate-y flavors!

  6. Peanut butter - so my peanut butter bar went missing (sad face here). I have no idea where I put it haha. I'm sure it tastes good but I can't give an opinion on that since I didn't get to taste it. I do have a granola/cereal that is dark chocolate peanut butter and I hope RX bar makes a flavor like that because it'll be like Reese's pieces!

Pros:

-Lots of flavor options, although I haven't tried them all. I liked 4/6 that was in the sample pack. I'm sure there are other awesome flavors!

-Quality/content is amazing. It's super healthy but still Satisfies your sweet tooth if you're craving something sweet. It has dates, almonds, cashew, and 3 egg whites (and no BS haha). Real. Whole. Foods. I love that I can have a snack that is healthy and satisfying. Also, these are "Whole30" approved which is awesome for those who are doing that. (I personally am not, though).

-Keeps me full longer than other bars!! Some snack bars just don't cut it for me - I'm still so hungry afterward. But this actually satisfies my hunger (at least for a while - 3 hrs tops) because of its protein content and the content overall. It's not just a bunch of fillers.

Cons:

-Okay so these bars can be a little bit more money-wise the other bars. But they do seem to always have some kind of deal going on on the website! You can also use this link here: http://rxbar.me/eJC_N to get $5 off your first order! It will automatically take off the $5 off at checkout.

-Not available in most stores :( i have to order these for the most part (which to me is not a big deal anymore) but having these in stores would be more convenient. On the website, there is a store locator to find what stores do carry it near your area!

Who else has tried RXBARS, and what do you think about them? Also if you have other favorite snack bars let me know down below!

Post-Workout Blueberry Protein Shake + The Masonbar Company

This past Friday, I decided to do leg day (which I postponed from Thursday, since this week has been hectic). My workout consisted of warming up on the treadmill for 6 mins, stretching and weightlifting: deadlifts, reverse lunges, leg presses, straight-leg dead lifts and hamstring curls; then stretching again at the end. I normally do super-sets, which mean I combine two exercises back to back as one set, completing 3-4 sets, and resting in between sets.

After this workout, I was completely done for! I usually would drink a protein-shake with just mixing my protein powder with 8oz of water, but I decided when I got home that I would make a Blueberry Protein Shake instead! Here's the recipe:

  • 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder (I use BSN Syntha-6 Vanilla Ice Cream flavor)
  • Handful of blueberries
  • 6 cubes of ice
  • 1-2 cups of Cashew milk (I honestly eye-balled it)

Blend everything in the blender, and voila - a quick post-workout shake that helped me last until lunch time, thanks to the protein content.

This smoothie already looked delicious, but I totally had to share with you all my favorite way to dress up my mason jars! A while back, when I first started using mason jars to drink basically everything out of I found out about The Mason Bar Company. They have the absolute cutest lids for your mason jars that have holes for straws in them so you can take your drinks to go. I have the plastic lids in copper and gold (but can't seem to find my gold one - insert sad face here), clear plastic straws, straw brush (to clean the straws), and a mint colored cuff. The lids are dishwasher safe, but the straws you have to hand-wash (which isn't a big deal to me). The cuff is super cute and fits my tall jars as well as my smaller ones. They also have bamboo lids for mason jars if that's something you're looking for. I haven't purchased those before but they're really cute and are also available if you're looking more for a storage lid!

Do you drink out of mason jars too? If you do, give these a try! It's a fun way to personalize your drinkware - and enjoy your post-workout smoothie or whatever you may be drinking :)

Dorothy

Keeping It Casual

If you follow me on Insta (@_dorothyfaye), I told you guys that I would post details to a whole 'nother #ootd. BUT I backed up my phone and deleted all the pictures because it was running low on storage. With that said, all my photos that I planned on posting were gone (sad face). Not to worry though, I'm back home for break so I'll have lots of pictures YAY!

Here's an alternative Casual #ootd - wear it when you're running errands, going to class, or grabbing a quick cup of coffee or tea with a friend. Whenever, really!

I love the simplicity of a v-neck tee and a good pair of jeans, plus throw on a cardigan, put on those converse's and cross-body bag - you're good to go! This was my casual look over the weekend, during lunch with my family at an outdoor seafood place by the port.

Never underestimate a casual outfit y'all.

Shop my look below (similar items linked since some items are things I've had for a while). Enjoy!
